How Braces Work & What to Expect in Florence, SC
If your child needs orthodontics, you should understand the options for treatment and what to expect during treatment. We are always happy to address patient and caregiver concerns and questions at appointments, so if anything comes up, please ask our dental professionals. The better a patient and caregiver understand the orthodontic treatment, the more empowered they will feel about making decisions and the more prepared they’ll be for orthodontics.
DID YOU KNOW?
Ancient Romans used braces by attaching a gold wire, known as a ligature wire, threaded through teeth.
Orthodontic Treatment Options
First, our team will consider the treatment options available for your child. Note that not every case allows for all these options. Some patients need a specific type of braces, and our team will let you know your child’s options.
Steps of Orthodontic Treatment
While every patient’s experience is unique, the below steps can be expected for patients during their orthodontic therapy.
- Initial consultation and X-rays with our team.
- Attach brackets and wires to teeth (for traditional dental braces.)
- Attend visits every six weeks for adjustments or new aligners.
- Removal of braces when treatment is complete.
- Continual use of a retainer to keep teeth in alignment.
Your Child’s Braces
Children are best served by traditional metal braces, in most cases. Bring your children in for an orthodontic consultation between the age of 7-10. Our children’s orthodontist will determine whether the teeth are properly spaced, the jaw is in alignment, and the upper palate is wide enough to accommodate permanent teeth.
Young children who need braces, spacers, or a palatal expander will enter Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment to prepare the mouth for properly spaced and aligned teeth. Treatment time varies for each case, but usually lasts for 6 to 18 months. A retainer should be worn after treatment is completed to maintain alignment.
Phase 2 Orthodontic Treatment often begins around age 11 or older. Phase 2 Orthodontics focuses on properly aligning permanent teeth and can last, on average, 12 to 20 months.
